About the Client:
The Hamburg Süd Group combines a variety of logistics services chains. In shipping containers, the group is represented by two brands: Hamburg Süd, a German carrier, and the Alliance, Brazilian shipping company, which operates ships flying the Brazilian flag. In addition, the Hamburg Süd Group is present in the shipping market with Rudolf A. Oetker, called (RAO) and Bulk Alliance (Aliabulk). There is yet another link in the chain, the Columbus Ship Management GmbH (CSG), whose responsibility in materials management is technical and crew management.
Hamburg Süd, has contracted Cálix for the analysis, development and implementation of a Business Intelligence tool, able to produce reports and indicators integrating data coming from various information systems used in operations.
The tool should enable integration with their intranet for generating operational reports, and also enable the production of indicators and dashboards to support officers in their management and decision making.
Cálix performs all activities related to analysis requirements, definition of reports, indicators and data cubes, deployment and configuration of the tool.
Tools and Technologies Applied:
Pentaho BI®: A platform for Business Intelligence (BI) process-centric and solutions oriented which is composed of BI components that enable the organization to develop a complete and integrated solution for BI problems. The platform consists of J2EE servers, security, portals, workflow, business rules, collaboration, content management, data integration, data analysis and data modeling tools.
MySQL®: Database Management System (DBMS) that uses SQL (Structured Query Language) as the interface. MySQL is one of the most popular data bases today, with over 10 million installations worldwide. Among users of the MySQL database include: NASA, Friendster, Banco Bradesco, Dataprev, HP, Nokia, Sony, Lufthansa, US Army, US Federal Reserve Bank, Associated Press, Alcatel, Slashdot, Cisco Systems, Google, and others.
Oracle®: Database Management System (DBMS) from Oracle® Corporation, which emerged in the late '70s when Larry Ellison saw an opportunity other companies had not realized, when he found a description of a working prototype of a relational database and discovered that no company had engaged in commercializing the technology. Besides the database, Oracle® maintains a development suite called Oracle® Developer Suite, used in the construction of computer programs that interact with its database. Oracle® also created a programming language called PL / SQL, used in transaction processing.
Java®: Object-oriented Programming Language developed in the 90s by a team of programmers led by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems®, and currently maintained by Oracle. Java is the conventional language of the Java platform, but not their only language, as the platform is composed of several languages, frameworks and extensions to a range of devices and platforms.
Web Services: Technological solution used widely for system integration and for communication between different applications, making it possible for new applications to interact with legacy systems developed on different platforms, since it can send and receive data between them.
Enterprise Architecture®: A tool developed by Sparx Systems®, which integrates a complete modeling environment based on teams and that includes the full life cycle of software development with tools for business modeling, systems engineering, enterprise architecture, requirements management, software project, code generation and testing.
Unified Modeling Language® (UML): A non proprietary third-generation modeling language which allows developers to view the products of their work in standardized diagrams to represent: structure, behavior, clustering, and annotation.
